About Trans Aid
With the goal of empowering the trans*, inter* and gender variant community which will actively work on increasing the visibility of trans*, inter* and gender variant community and topics, as well as on promoting and protecting the rights of trans*, inter* and gender variant persons, Trans Aid – Association for promoting and protecting the rights of trans, inter and gender variant persons was officially registered in February 2012.
Trans Aid is run by 5 members of a Coordinators Board and an Assembly of its 20 members. The number of active supporters that help in our work is constantly increasing.
Trans Aid is defined as a trans-feminist, anti-fascist, and non-hierarchical organization which stands for solidarity of the LGBTIQ community, and opposes violence and discrimination against trans*, inter* and gender variant persons.
Trans Aid envisions a free, just and solidary society in which the right to self-determination of gender and sex is a core value.
The mission of Trans Aid is promoting and protecting the human rights of trans*, inter* and gender variant persons, deconstructing cisnormativity, the gender binary, patriarchy and heteronormativity, as well as achieving the full equality of persons of all genders, gender identities and/or gender expressions, through empowerment, advocacy, direct work and support, education, sensitization, research and other activities.
Specific objectives through which we are fulfilling our main task in long term are to:
- Work towards the improvement of legal and medical practices for the purpose of commitment to the individual wellbeing, the right to choice and self-determination, and the general welfare of trans*, inter* and gender variant persons (e.g. adopting legal gender recognition legislation based on human rights standards, abolishing medical procedures on intersex children which are not medically necessary, providing subsidized and adequate health care, the depathologization of gender identities)
- Implement educational and support programs for the purpose of empowering, raising awareness of and educating the trans*, inter* and gender variant population: direct work with trans*, inter* and gender variant persons (individual counseling, support groups, safe house), educating individuals and groups, conducting research, social entrepreneurship, publishing, eliminating violence, discrimination and multiple discrimination of trans*, inter* and gender variant persons, as well as developing and using gender-neutral language
- Sensitize the public on trans*, inter* and gender variant topics so that trans*, inter* and gender variant persons are respected in society to such an extent that they feel comfortable being visible in everyday life: detabooization and increasing visibility of the trans*, inter* and gender variant population as well as increasing the visibility of human rights violations based on gender identity and gender expression, social inclusion of trans*, inter* and gender variant persons in public life, shaping affirmative attitudes towards the trans*, inter* and gender variant population through a positive media presence
- Develop and increase the capacity of Trans Aid for the purpose of promoting and protecting the rights of trans*, inter* and gender variant persons on a social level, sustainability of the organization, as well as empowering trans*, inter* and gender variant persons throughout Croatia
Many of these activities started in 2012 and represent our first steps. We cooperated with organizations that act in the field of women’s and LGBT rights in Croatia and other countries in Europe and connected with related international organizations, such as Transgender Europe. Since our beginnings we are in contact with medical professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists and plastic surgeons.
In October 2012 we started organizing monthly support groups for trans*, inter* and gender variant persons to address the growing need for that kind of support. Along with the support groups we also provide individual support (online, personal or telephone counseling), after which many persons decide to join the support groups.
Until mid 2013, the Association did not have financial needs necessary for its work, all Trans Aid work was on a volunteer basis supported by individual donations and financing from our member’s personal budgets. In July, 2013 Trans Aid became a partner organization of the Women’s Room project “Gender Equality for All – It’s Time for Transgender Rights,” primarily funded by the European Union.
With the objective of increasing the visibility of trans*, inter* and gender variant community and topics, so far we have participated in various Croatian and regional round tables, workshops, sessions and debates organized by institutions and/or LGBTIQ organizations. Our members have also appeared in media and thus also increased the visibility of the Trans Aid, the trans*, inter* and gender variant community and topics.
